What Do You See In The Mirror?

“Mirror mirror on the wall who’s the fairest of them all.” More than likely, you are probably very familiar with this popular Disney quote. Our society tells us all the time that we have to buy the latest fashion trends. Get botox injections. Be on the latest diets. Have all kinds of risky surgeries and basically do whatever it takes to look and act picture perfect at all times. Trying to be perfect can be overwhelming and exhausting. In the end, we are running ourselves ragged, trying to achieve an impossible goal. A goal that we were never meant to achieve. 1st John 1:8 “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us”. We all sin and fall short. None of us are sinless people. There has only ever been one perfect human being, and it wasn’t me, and it isn’t you. It’s Jesus.

Jesus was and will always be perfect. We can try for the rest of our lives to achieve perfection and still miss the mark. We will always be imperfect people, and yet we are still loved. 1st Corinthians 6:20 “For you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body”. Take care of your body. It’s a precious temple that was given to you. Cherish it. Jesus paid it all. He laid down his life for us. That’s how much he loves us. That’s the kind of amazing love that he has in his heart for you and me.

It can be all too easy to get caught up in what society tells us we should look like and act like. Looks fade over time. Your pretty face won’t last forever what matters more is your heart. Let’s not forget what God told Samuel. 1st Samuel 16:7 “Do not look at his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him”. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” You might think that your outward appearance is what defines you. It doesn’t. Your accomplishments aren’t what sets you apart. You could be the most accomplished person in the world and still be completely consumed and obsessed with trying to be perfect. Your accomplishments and achievements don’t define you. Your heart defines you, and the Father knows what kind of heart you have. He sees you. He sees into your soul. Your looks don’t define you. The world doesn’t define you. What people have said about you doesn’t define you. What you’ve done doesn’t define you. Your failures don’t define. The Father is the only one that defines you.

So let me ask you, dear readers. How do you see yourself when you look in the mirror? Do you see all of your past mistakes? Do you look at yourself as a failure? Do you see someone who is worthless? Do you tell yourself things that you would never tell anyone else? Do you put yourself down regularly? How do you see yourself? How do you talk to yourself when no one else is around? Are you able to speak kindly to yourself? Do you build yourself up or tear yourself down? Are you your own worst enemy?

How does God see you? He sees you as his beautiful creation. Genesis 1:27 “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God, he created him; male and female, he created them”. He made us in his own image. He could have made us in any image that he wanted, yet he created us in his own image. I think that’s such a lovely and powerful thing. Psalm 139:13-14 “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well”. He handcrafted us in our mother’s wombs. He took his time making me, and he took his time making you. He didn’t just say that you were good. No, he said that you were perfect. In his eyes, you are fearfully and wonderfully made. Do you believe it?

When I was younger, it took me a long time to look in the mirror and like what I saw. I used to be one of those women that would compare myself to others. I would think things like she’s prettier them me. Or I bet she’s smarter than me. I really struggled with not comparing myself to others. I struggled with being and feeling content with who I was because I didn’t know who I was. I didn’t understand that I was made in the image of God. I thought that my self-worth was in my outward appearance. I couldn’t grasp the concept that my worth was so much more than my skin-deep appearance. Luke 12:6-7 “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows”. Since the Father cares enough for the birds and never forgets them, what made me think he didn’t value me? I mattered to him, and I needed to learn to love myself the way he loves me.

What opinions are you listening to? Is it your friends? Families? The worlds? The only opinion that matters is God’s. If he can love us, then shouldn’t we try harder to love ourselves? John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life”. He loved us enough to send Jesus into a lost and dying world. He loved us enough to have Jesus die on a cross for us. None of us are worthy of that kind of love, and yet he gave it to each of us anyway. Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”, We all make mistakes and yet we are still loved. I am still loved. You are still loved. We have value—our lives matter. We can still be used for the Father’s glory.

Dear reader’s what blinders have been pulled over your eyes? What lies from Satan have you been listening to? Whatever they are, it’s time for you to stop listening! Stop right now make a choice. Take a stand and stop! Stop listening to his lies! Ask the Father to help you rip the bandages off your eyes and really start to see yourself how he sees you. Song of Solomon 4:7 “You are altogether beautiful, my love; there is no flaw in you”. You might feel too damaged beyond repair, but yes, he loves you. He created you. He wants you! He chose you! Now rise and choose to see yourself not through the world’s eyes but his eyes. See yourself through the eyes of pure love.
